This game was a three person project over the course of a weekend. My primary roles were project lead, designer and developer.
Achieved 1st place 🏆 in the MixJam9 Submission MixJam9 Results Page.
A theme generator was used for game's the prompts, 'Robots', 'Time Travel' and 'Skateboards'.
Originally based on 'Sonic The Hedgehog 2's Chaos Emerald Mini-game' this game evolved to become an endless runner as it allowed the team to focus more on generating obstacles.
This was my first games jam with Unreal Engine being in the Japanese language.
The main issue was more about designing the game and what the player's mechanics should be.
To incorporate the skateboard theme effectivley, the character needed to meet the gameplay expectations of skateboard games.
This meant developing a point system and a couple of tricks.
The first trick was a combo after performing a jump. Re-pressing the button would perform a flip which could be done a few times in succession.
The next was a rail grind. This meant the player could perform a jump, air-trick and then land on the grind rail to rack up points.
The enemies and obstacles needed to get the player moving and to provide a challenge.
The first type of enemies were ones that would shoot a projectile and remain stationary.
The second group of enemies will move towards the player and shoot, meaning the player would have to react quicker to approaching enemies.
The final enemy was unique. The UFO which could abduct the player, requiring the player to alternate and press repeatedly the A and D keys to break free.
The story was based on a robot who performed cool tricks which could transcend time and space.
The main issue was how to alternate through time.
I opted for an endless runner, using time portals which could change the upcoming tiles, enemies and visuals.
