Static

Overview

Static Title Screen.

This game was a four person team project over the course of a weekend. My primary roles were project lead, designer and developer.
The game was a submission for the MiniJam125 and the main theme was 'signal' with a secondary theme, 'everything is tied to the rhythm'.
The concept was a horror underwater game where the world would react to the player's heart rate. This included how frequently the lights would flash.

Problems and Solutions

The Character

The main challenge was to address movement. As the primary function of the game was stealth, the player could only hide.
The character's movement was fast enough to outrun enemies but slow enough to keep tension high.

The enemies

The primary enemy was a creature in the sea, which chased the player when in close proximity.
I created an enemy AI which used behaviour trees to decide its functions.
The secondary enemy was a massive searchlight which had a full 3D rotation of the level. If it spots the player it would increase the heart rate.

Story and Level Structure

Our character Static Blub awoke in an underwater graveyard filled with TV's. With their help they would shine a way home.
Enough gaps were created in the level to allow the player to get detected by the searchlight.
Asset placement provided good areas to hide, recover health and encounter enemies.

Synopsis/Demo

Static is lost at sea, amongst the horrors of other units like itself, strung up and left to rot.
The other units still have some power and will attempt to light the way for Static to reach home.
The searchlight will increase Static's heart rate, which coincides with the TV's flicker.
Watch out for the creatures of the deep. Is this how the others met their end?

Warning!

If you suffer from epilepsy we would advise you to not play or watch any content from this game.
